Microbiological Air Sampling in Operating Theatres
Based on recommendations by the Hospital Infection Society, Microbiological Air Sampling can be carried out immediately following any clinical deep clean or at any other time specified.
Four samples are taken per theatre and/or TSSU by Sieve Impaction process. These samples are cultured for a minimum of 72 hours in an independent, University based Laboratory and the results are usually available within six to eight working days. As a guideline, aerobic cultures on non-selective mediums should not exceed 35 bacterial and/or Fungal CFU’s (Colony forming units) as an average of all samples taken within a conventionally ventilated Theatre. For an Ultra Clean Theatre, the guideline is 0.5 CFU’s.
If the results are below these guidelines and therefore satisfactory, our Certificate of Cleanliness is issued, which can be utilised in conjunction with any Healthcare Commission Audit.
